History and present time of the town
Nymburk is situated in a fertile part of the middle Elbe riverside in altitude of 186 m and it has around 14.600 inhabitants.
The town was founded by Czech king Přemysl Otakar II about the year 1275 and for the whole middle ages it belonged among the most influential towns in the country, being endowed with many privileges.
Owing to its ramparts and moats it became a fortress on the River Elbe. It was an important pillar of a royal power. The settlement beginnings of strategic plaener hillock above the river where there was sought-after ford across, reach deep in the history. A number of archaeological findings give evidence of the fact, particularly a discovery of primaeval burial mound from the late Stone Age, dated 3.600 years BC, which was located in the area of the original big fortified fort. This unique finding is being prepared to become accessible to public. The town was developing and getting richer until the beginning of Thirty Years´ War. During this war Nymburk was burnt and plundered, the fortress was almost demolished, the ramparts destroyed. It was difficult to revive the town and bring it back to life, being moreover often disturbed with big fires. The turning point in modern history was the railway construction to the town in the year 1870. Since the time the town was expanding and developing, new factories, schools and public buildings were built, regulation of the River Elbe, construction of a new bridge and hydro-electrical power station with sluice were carried out (the beginning of the 20th century).
Present Nymburk is a modern administrative town, the centre of the middle Elbe riverside. It is the town of culture, green, sports and numerous historical sights, which is worth your visit: St.Giles´s Church from the period 1280-1380, rare example of Gothic brick architecture; medieval walls which present typical view of the town in the location Na Přístavě; two moats – Malé a Velké Valy (Small and Big Ramparts) – inseparable part of the fortification, defining rarely preserved mediaeval lay-out of the town, the historical core of which was declared a town conservation area; further it is the Renaissance style Town Hall in the Přemyslovců Square and some historical buildings; a part of Renaissance brewery manufacturing facilities from the end of the 16th century, presented to the public; the Plague Column; the former waterworks „Turkish Tower“ on the riverbank; the St. John Nepomuk chapel once a part of the church in the Dominican monastery grounds from the 13th century etc.
From modern architectural sights the Neo-Renaissance Sokolovna building, the Gymnazium (Grammar school), the Evangelical Church, the Hussite Church, the Art Nouveau style waterworks, the River Elbe bridge, the Theatre, the Primary school in Komenského street or the Cubist style Crematorium building – the work of world-famous architect B.Feuerstein are worth seeing.
